In brief
In the fourth quarter of 2024, Tesla reported a sharp decline in profits, primarily driven by fierce competition from global EV rivals and a heavy reliance on its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.
Tesla's profitability faced a downturn in 2024, with profits dropping to $2.3 billion in Q4, a stark contrast to a hefty $7.9 billion the previous year. The decline was attributable in part to a one-time tax benefit in 2023 that inflated profits. Overall, Tesla's annual profits fell to $7.1 billion from $15 billion, even as sales edged up to $97.7 billion. In an effort to boost sales amidst growing competition, the electric giant has slashed prices and introduced low-interest financing options. Although these strategies improved sales by 2% in Q4, rising competition from China, Europe, and the U.S. is putting pressure on Tesla's leading position. The company diversified its offerings by selling energy storage batteries, which somewhat mitigated the slowdown in car sales. However, its reliance on just two models—the Model 3 sedan and Model Y—you remain a concern as new players continue to expand their electric vehicle lines and win over consumers.
