The U.K.'s National Crime Agency has raised serious concerns about the “unprecedented risk” posed to teenagers by sinister online groups. A recent report revealed that these networks are actively recruiting youth, particularly young boys, by promoting sadistic and misogynistic content. The alarming findings indicate a sixfold increase in reports of such incidents between 2022 and 2024.
Graeme Biggar, the agency's director general, emphasized that these groups are not hidden in the dark corners of the internet but operate within the everyday online spaces frequented by young people. Tragically, many young girls are being groomed not only to harm themselves but, in severe cases, to consider suicide.
The agency's findings specifically highlight a growing trend of teenage boys sharing this harmful material and using it to target girls as young as 11. As these communities become more entrenched in the digital landscape, awareness and intervention become crucial to protect vulnerable youth from these disturbing influences.
