In brief
Kizza Besigye, a prominent Ugandan opposition leader and former presidential candidate, went missing during a visit to Kenya but resurfaced in military custody at a Kampala court facing serious charges.
Kizza Besigye, known for his role in Ugandan politics, vanished while attending a book launch in Nairobi. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, reported on social media that he had been "kidnapped" and was being held in a military jail back in Uganda without access to family or legal representation. Amidst growing concerns over political repression in the region, Besigye was brought to court in Kampala where he appeared with security forces. He's charged with unlawful possession of firearms and is accused of conspiring to undermine Uganda’s defense capabilities. Both he and his associate, Haji Obeid Lutale, denied the allegations. Critics fear this incident highlights the increasing crackdown on dissent in Uganda and Kenya, raising alarms about political freedoms.
