In brief

On October 30, 2026, China signed a $30‑million grant agreement with Nigeria to support small‑scale development initiatives across the country. Nigerian officials welcomed the aid as a sign of strong bilateral ties and a commitment to grassroots poverty alleviation, while Chinese representatives highlighted the grant’s focus on quick, low‑investment “small‑but‑beautiful” projects that can deliver tangible improvements. The deal follows a previous 200‑million‑yuan donation and is part of a broader partnership to share China’s poverty‑alleviation experience.

On Oct. 30, 2026, China signed a US$30‑million grant with Nigeria to fund small‑scale development projects that aim to improve livelihoods across the country. The signing took place at the Nigerian Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in Abuja.

China had earlier granted 200 million yuan (about US$29.8 million) to Nigeria for similar purposes. Speaking at the ceremony, Hongyan Ambassador Yu Dunhai said the new grant would support “small but beautiful” projects that require limited investment and can deliver quick results.

Abubakar Bagudu, Nigeria’s minister of budget and economic planning, expressed deep appreciation for the aid. He described the agreement as evidence of strong bilateral relations and shared development objectives between the two countries.

Bagudu highlighted Nigeria’s efforts to tackle poverty at the grassroots level, noting that more than 8,800 interventions have been recorded at the lowest level of the economic support program. He said Nigeria could learn from China’s poverty‑alleviation strategy to accelerate its national development.

The grant is part of a broader partnership where China shares its experience in poverty reduction with developing nations. By focusing on low‑cost, high‑impact projects, the funding aims to create a model that other regions can replicate, potentially generating multiplier effects in local economies.

With this support, Nigeria hopes to improve the quality of life for millions of residents, demonstrating how international cooperation can drive sustainable change at the community level.
