In brief

China’s hospital ship Auspicious Ark arrived in Lomé on Sunday to begin a medical outreach mission, marking the first visit by a Chinese naval ship to Togo. The mission, called Mission Harmony‑2026, will provide services on board and include exchanges with a Togolese military hospital. The launch follows years of growing diplomatic partnership between China and Togo, which reached a comprehensive strategic level in 2024 and a new community status in October 2026.

China’s naval hospital ship, Auspicious Ark, docked in the Togo capital of Lomé on Sunday as part of a medical outreach mission, the state news agency Xinhua reported. This marks the first time a Chinese hospital ship has visited Togo.

The ship is carrying out Mission Harmony‑2026, and will offer free medical treatment to local patients aboard. A medical team will also travel to a Togolese military hospital to share knowledge and practice.

During the visit, organizers plan a deck reception and a friendly basketball game with Togolese military personnel, aiming to strengthen friendship and cultural exchange.

China and Togo have shared diplomatic ties since 1972. In September 2024, the two countries raised their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

In October 2026, the leaders of China and Togo declared a new China‑Togo community with a shared future for the new era, reflecting deeper cooperation across many areas.

These steps show how China uses aid and military cooperation to build ties in Africa. The hospital ship’s arrival signals a focus on health and people‑to‑people contact as part of this strategy.

Overall, the mission demonstrates a blend of humanitarian aid and diplomatic outreach, with both sides hoping to bolster friendship and collaboration moving forward.
