In brief

As Israel integrates AI in military operations, it raises questions about the implications for civilian safety and warfare ethics.

In late 2023, Israel sought to target Ibrahim Biari, a Hamas commander linked to the Oct. 7 attacks, but struggled to locate him in Gaza’s extensive tunnel systems. To enhance their intelligence-gathering capabilities, Israeli forces turned to newly developed military technology enhanced by artificial intelligence, which had remained unused until this point. Engineers in Israel’s Unit 8200, akin to the U.S. National Security Agency, quickly integrated A.I. into the tech to help track Biari's communications. On Oct. 31, following the improvements, the A.I. tool pinpointed Biari’s approximate location. Unfortunately, this led to airstrikes that not only killed Biari but also claimed the lives of over 125 civilians, according to Airwars, highlighting the potential dangers of deploying A.I. in combat scenarios. This incident exemplifies a broader trend, where Israel has rapidly incorporated various A.I. technologies into military operations during the ongoing conflict. From using facial recognition to identify individuals to deploying A.I. systems for generating potential targets, these innovations reflect a significant shift in military strategy that raises serious ethical concerns about collateral damage and the responsible use of technology in warfare. As these technologies evolve, the international community watches closely, debating the balance between military efficiency and the protection of civilian lives and rights.
