In a shocking incident, Colombia's military has revealed that 57 soldiers have been taken hostage in the southwestern Micay Canyon area, a region notorious for cocaine production. The abductions took place over the weekend, with 31 soldiers abducted on Saturday and the remaining on Sunday by over 200 civilians. Brigadier General Federico Alberto Mejia described the situation as “kidnapping,” highlighting the ongoing tensions in this area, which is a key transit point for drug trafficking.

The military believes that the kidnappers are acting under the influence of dissidents from the Farc rebel group, which had previously reached a peace agreement with the government in 2016. Local reports indicate that the EMC rebel faction, a notable breakaway group from Farc, might be behind these recent kidnappings, although they have yet to make a public statement on the matter. The Micay Canyon remains a focal point in Colombia’s long-standing conflict with various rebel groups.
