Pope Leo XIV, addressing Roman Catholic cardinals for the first time since his election, made clear his commitment to the path laid out by Pope Francis. He stressed the importance of compassion for the marginalized and collaboration among the Church's leadership, aiming to modernize Catholicism further. Drawing on Francis’ influential 2013 document, he highlighted goals like “collegiality” and “dialogue with the contemporary world.”
Citing the impact of the current industrial revolution, particularly regarding artificial intelligence, the pope acknowledged new challenges related to human dignity and justice. He reaffirmed the Church’s role in promoting social teachings as a guiding force for these issues. Referring to Francis as a “humble servant,” Leo signaled a continuation of Francis's vision, reassuring cardinals about maintaining the direction of their faith.
As he exited the meeting, Cardinal Baltazar Enrique Porras of Venezuela commented positively on Leo's dedication to the formation of priests and bishops, while Cardinal Sean Brady from Ireland appreciated Leo's personable approach in greeting attendees. This marks the beginning of Leo XIV's pontificate, aimed at combining tradition with contemporary values.
