In brief

In a significant development, Ecuadorian authorities have apprehended notorious gang leader José Adolfo Macías, prompting promises of a crackdown on crime and a pledge for his extradition to the U.S.

In a police operation that marked a major victory against organized crime, Ecuadorian security forces declared on Wednesday that they had captured gang leader José Adolfo Macías, known as “Fito,” who had previously escaped from prison in January 2024, inciting a wave of chaos throughout the nation. President Daniel Noboa shared news of the capture via social media, stating the authorities are now awaiting the U.S. response regarding extradition. Fito is wanted in the U.S. for drug trafficking and arms smuggling, and he leads the notorious Los Choneros gang — one of the country’s most dangerous criminal groups. Fito’s escape had led to riots, kidnappings, and multiple violent incidents across Ecuador, prompting the government to implement a 60-day state of emergency in a failed attempt to locate him. He was found hidden in an underground bunker in Manta, approximately 120 miles from Guayaquil, where he had originally escaped. The military released footage of the operation capturing Fito, who was unceremoniously arrested and transferred to an armored vehicle. Following the capture, President Noboa vowed to take further action against gangs, expressing determination to restore order and safety in the country through continuous efforts against crime. The U.S. Embassy in Quito celebrated the arrest, emphasizing international cooperation in tackling organized crime.
