In brief
Trump discussed trade with Xi and suggested travel plans, yet tensions over tariffs remain high.
Donald Trump has confirmed that he plans to visit China following a recent phone conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The two leaders engaged in an hour-and-a-half discussion, which Trump described as a “very good talk,” mainly centered around trade relations. While Trump extended an invitation for Xi to visit the White House in return, an official confirmation regarding these trips remains pending from either side. This phone call marks the first communication between the two since the trade conflict between the U.S. and China escalated back in February. Chinese state media noted that the White House requested the conversation. Trump expressed that the dialogue led to “a very positive conclusion for both countries,” but Xi emphasized that the U.S. needed to remove "negative measures" imposed on China. The ongoing tensions surrounding tariffs have intensified since both leaders had accused each other of violating a recent deal aimed at easing restrictions. Trump's administration raised tariffs on imports from various countries but particularly targeted China, which retaliated with its own increased rates. Following a tenuous truce reached earlier this year, a push for both sides to lower tariffs saw the U.S. tariffs on Chinese products drop to 30% while China reduced tariffs on U.S. goods to 10%. However, both parties now find themselves at a stalemate, claiming breaches of the agreement's terms. The U.S. has voiced concerns about China's failure to restart shipments of critical minerals and rare earth products essential for various industries. In response, China has denied these claims, arguing that the U.S. has undermined the agreement by introducing new restrictions. Amid these discussions, Trump reaffirmed his stance on welcoming Chinese students to the U.S., stating, "It's an honor to have them, frankly." However, he did mention that some checks would be necessary. Furthermore, Xi Jinping urged the U.S. to approach Taiwan with caution during the call to avoid escalating tensions, especially as the U.S. reaffirms its military support for Taiwan. The dialogue between Trump and Xi indicates a long-anticipated chance for renewed discussions after months of silence, reflecting the delicate balance in U.S.-China relations as they navigate complex trade and diplomatic issues.
