In brief

The supposed sovereign nation for Hindus, led by the fugitive Swami Nithyananda, was caught in a land trafficking scandal in Bolivia, resulting in arrests and deportations.

A bizarre tale has unfolded in Bolivia as representatives of the fictitious “United States of Kailasa” were apprehended for attempting to negotiate extensive land leases with Indigenous groups. The group, created by Swami Nithyananda, a fugitive holy man known for his controversial claims, tried to present itself as a legitimate nation, complete with its own currency and governance. However, Bolivian officials swiftly rejected these assertions, labeling the deals as fraudulent “land trafficking.” Recently, 20 members of the Kailasa delegation were arrested and subsequently deported to their respective countries, such as India and the United States. The Bolivian government, stating that it does not recognize Kailasa as a sovereign entity, voided the land agreements, highlighting the gap between the aspirations of the group's emissaries and reality. Nithyananda fled India in 2019 amidst serious allegations of criminal activities including rape and child abuse. The saga of Kailasa serves as a reminder of the consequences when fiction meets the harsh truths of global diplomacy.
