In brief

New Zealand's high commissioner to the UK, Phil Goff, has been recalled following remarks questioning President Trump's grasp of historical context during a talk about the war in Ukraine.

In London, during a discussion at the Chatham House think tank, Goff posed a rhetorical question after hearing comments from Finland's foreign minister regarding Europe's role in confronting Russian aggression. He referenced Winston Churchill, asking whether Trump, who had reinstated Churchill's bust in the Oval Office, truly understood history, especially in relation to Putin. This sparked laughter from the audience, but National Foreign Minister Winston Peters deemed Goff's remarks "deeply disappointing," leading to his removal from the position.
