In brief

The storm brings fears of severe damage, following recent devastation in the Philippines where over 139 lives have been lost.

Super Typhoon Kong-rey, a formidable tropical cyclone, is racing towards Taiwan and is predicted to land as a Category 4 storm, bringing with it intense winds and torrential rain. As of Wednesday, local officials have taken precautionary measures, including grounding flights and securing boats. Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai expressed concern over the storm's potential to trigger devastating landslides and road closures in the eastern regions. The storm’s outer bands are already affecting the northern Philippines which recently suffered from Tropical Storm Trami. Reports confirm that these dual storms have sadly resulted in at least 139 fatalities and left many others missing. The Central Weather Administration of Taiwan has issued a land warning, indicating that the impact of Kong-rey's sustained winds could begin within the next 18 hours. As the island prepares for the oncoming fury, communities are urged to stay alert and follow safety measures.
