In brief

In an airstrike on the Nuseirat area in central Gaza, the Israeli Defence Forces reported the deaths of two Hamas commanders. The soldiers claim the men led attacks against Israeli forces and civilians in violation of a ceasefire that began in October 2025. The strike comes amid stalled implementation of the U.S.-backed Gaza peace plan.

The Israeli Defense Forces said Friday that an airstrike on the Nuseirat area in the central Gaza Strip killed two Hamas commanders.

One was identified as Ihab Jamil Abu Taqiya, a squad commander in Hamas’ military wing, who the Israeli statement said had been involved in holding Israeli hostages at the start of the war. The other was Ibrahim Gihad Muhammad Abu Oshaiba, a platoon commander in the same wing, who also died in the strike, according to the Israeli military.

Both commanders were accused of advancing attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians and of working to restore Hamas’ military capabilities, actions the Israeli statement said were a “systematic violation of the ceasefire.”

The Israeli military said it had taken measures to reduce harm to civilians before the strike was carried out. The strike was launched during a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that began in October 2025, which stopped Israel’s large‑scale offensive but has seen continued targeting of Hamas positions.

The U.S.-backed Gaza peace plan, which envisioned further Israeli withdrawals and the disarmament of Hamas, has not been fully implemented. The ongoing conflict has remained tense, with both sides continuing operations in the region.
