In brief

Finland has recently cleared the oil tanker Eagle S, suspected of involvement in undersea cable sabotage, to leave its waters, but investigations into criminal activities are ongoing.

The Finnish authorities announced on Sunday that they released the Eagle S, an oil tanker seized in December amid suspicions of its role in cutting critical undersea cables. This vessel reportedly has connections to Russia’s shadow fleet, raising concerns about potential sabotage against European infrastructure. Despite the ship’s release, criminal investigations will keep going, with eight crew members implicated in offenses relating to the cable damages. Finland’s Prime Minister, Petteri Orpo, confirmed that investigation efforts would continue, including forensic analysis and further crew interviews. The recent underwater cable incidents have triggered NATO to enhance regional security in response to fears of covert Russian operations. The Eagle S, previously journeying from St. Petersburg to Port Said, was initially seized to prevent further sabotage as the investigation unfolds.
