In brief

A coach, faced with the challenges of leading a youth soccer team, reflects on the balance between teaching technique and securing wins, and recalls the wisdom from his own youth coach.

When it comes to youth soccer, navigating the complexities of coaching can be quite the challenge, especially when your team consists of under-7 players, including your own child. Recently, I found myself coaching a team that kept struggling to stop the goals—goal after goal seemed to come wrapped in an invisible box of errors! Despite playing non-competitive matches in England, the pressure was intense. Kids might not know the scores, but the results were clear, and I worried their enthusiasm could slip away. Having encouraged the children to express their unique styles of play, it was tough to watch them trip over their own feet instead of playing smart. That’s when inspiration struck! I remembered the simple yet timeless advice from my childhood coach: "Play the way you’re facing" and "If in doubt, boot it out." Sometimes, basics are best—getting the kids to focus on not overcomplicating their game might just be what turns it around. After all, teaching kids how to enjoy the game while also embracing strategy could be the ultimate goal behind the whistle.
