In brief

In a bid to boost tourism, New Zealand has eased visa rules allowing visitors to work remotely for foreign employers.

New Zealand is rolling out the welcome mat for digital nomads! The country has announced relaxed visa requirements that let tourists work remotely for a foreign employer while exploring its stunning landscapes. Visitors can now carry out remote work for up to 90 days without facing tax issues, aimed at boosting the tourism sector, which generates nearly $11 billion. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford expressed that this change will encourage visitors to prolong their stays, driving more spending in the country. The new rules apply to all visitor visas, including those visiting family or friends, making NZ a hotspot for wanderers looking to blend work and travel. However, it's important to note that remote work must be for overseas employers, as those wanting to work for a local company still need proper visas. The digital nomad trend, which gained traction in the 2010s and saw rapid growth due to the pandemic, is becoming popular worldwide. Countries like Japan, South Korea, and Portugal have also introduced similar schemes, but it’s a double-edged sword, with some locations experiencing challenges like increased living costs due to the influx of remote workers.
