In brief

Sixteen precariously wounded children evacuated from Gaza are navigating new lives in Italy, grappling with trauma while receiving medical care and support, all amid the lingering scars of war.

In a picturesque Italian summer camp, children are meeting Shaymaa Shady, a 6-year-old who lost her leg due to the ongoing violence in Gaza. Their curiosity is palpable as they ask her questions about what happened, with one child asking, “Did she go to war?” Shaymaa is one of 16 injured children evacuated from Gaza months ago, a crucial action prompted by urgent medical needs following the war between Israel and Hamas. Each child, often accompanied by a relative, was flown out as part of complex negotiations between various aid organizations and governments.Stories of trauma echo through the camp—like that of Ahmad al-Saafen, only 4 years old, who is learning to walk with a new leg after losing the previous one to Israeli bombings. Likewise, Sarah Yusuf, with a pelvis shattered in an airstrike, experiences the joy of movement again, free from limping.Despite the beauty of their new surroundings, these children and their caretakers face immense emotional turmoil. Many of them left behind loved ones, uncertain of their fates amidst a devastated homeland. “Italy is beautiful, but I need support,” admits Lina Gamal, Shaymaa’s aunt, longing for the family she had to leave behind. The war has left deep scars on both the land and its people, claiming over 40,000 Palestinian lives and creating countless disabilities. As these children navigate their recovery, they also tackle the cultural and linguistic barriers of school and camps present in their new lives. Their journeys, marked by resilience and hope, represent a quest for healing in the face of unimaginable loss.
