In brief
A breach in the protective shell of Reactor No. 4 at Chernobyl poses serious threats following a deliberate drone strike.
Five technicians were on-site battling cold weather and remnants of fire as a Russian drone struck, creating a substantial 540 square-foot hole in the protective shell. This incident, one of the most alarming since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war, nearly compromised Reactor No. 4's safety at the infamous nuclear power plant. Despite no reports of injury and stable radiation levels, Ukrainian authorities were alarmed by the timing and potential consequences of the attack—just before a summit of world leaders in Munich. They described the strike as a blatant risk, targeting a site already burdened by tragedy. Nuclear experts and officials are now calling for urgent repairs to ensure the continued safety of Chernobyl’s containment structures.
