In brief
Typhoon Danas has wreaked havoc on Taiwan, resulting in two fatalities, over 300 injuries, and widespread power outages affecting nearly 400,000 households.
The summer months in Taiwan are typically marked by typhoons, and Typhoon Danas has certainly made an unforgettable mark. Making landfall late Sunday night, the Category 1 hurricane struck Chiayi County on the island's southwestern coast, causing a trail of destruction. Reports indicate that at least two individuals have lost their lives, while more than 300 others sustained injuries, as various towns grapple with wind and rain effects. Significant power outages have plagued the island, with nearly 400,000 households left in the dark by Monday afternoon. Schools and businesses across multiple cities were forced to close in response to the storm's fury, an occurrence highlighted by Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, which noted that Typhoon Danas is the first to directly hit Chiayi since 1958. Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te addressed the nation on social media, warning of the storm's unusual trajectory that would impact the entire island. The unfortunate casualties include a man who depended on a breathing apparatus that failed during a power outage and another who was killed by a falling tree in Tainan, the island's historic capital. As the storm moves towards mainland China, rescue operations and assessments are expected to ramp up in the aftermath.
