Joe Biden has made headlines with his first major public speech since leaving the White House, taking aim at former President Donald Trump's handling of welfare policies. Speaking at a disability rights event in Chicago, Biden highlighted the negative impact of the current administration's approach to the Social Security system, which he described as a "sacred promise." He remarked that changes proposed by Trump's team - including significant staffing cuts within the Social Security Agency - are damaging. Although Biden shied away from directly naming Trump, he expressed concern over the "hatchet" being taken to vital welfare programs and emphasized the importance of social security to about 67 million Americans, especially senior citizens.
The Trump administration, represented by figures like Elon Musk, has touted social security as rife with fraud and has plans to reduce its workforce by roughly 10%. Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, reassured that the former president remains committed to protecting benefits for lawful American citizens. Meanwhile, Biden's speech attracted additional attention when former President Barack Obama criticized Trump's recent decisions regarding federal funds for Harvard University, highlighting a pattern of conflict since both leaders exited the Oval Office.
