In brief
From tracking real missile threats to training for space conflict, the U.S. Space Force is reshaping modern warfare.
The U.S. Space Force, often referred to as "Guardians," conducts training exercises to track missile launches globally and provide timely alerts. At Buckley Space Force Base in Colorado, these Guardians work around the clock, surrounded by advanced technology that connects them to a network of military satellites monitoring global missile activity. During a recent drill, they practiced responding to missile launches from countries like Yemen and Iran, which included a real incident last month involving an Iranian missile offensive. Colonel Ann Hughes described how the team successfully protected U.S. personnel in Qatar using immediate intelligence gathered from their operations. The Space Force is pivotal in the U.S. military's strategy, as emerging threats from countries like China and Russia escalate. They’re developing a missile defense program known as the "Golden Dome," drawing inspiration from Israel's Iron Dome. This ambitious project, backed by significant funding, aims to provide advanced protection against hypersonic missiles and other modern warfare challenges.Strategic focus is crucial, particularly with the increasing number of satellites launched into space. Estimates suggest that we could have over 60,000 satellites in orbit by 2030, leading to complicated interactions and potential conflicts in space. Colonel Phoenix Hauser warns of the need for readiness to engage in these "dog fights," preparing for encounters that could go beyond traditional combat.Overall, the U.S. Space Force has quickly become a vital part of the military landscape, ensuring that America maintains its strategic advantages through continued innovation and readiness in space. The Guardians emphasize the importance of their role, and as Colonel Hauser puts it, "we're already sparring in space," ensuring they are prepared for any future threats.
