In brief
Albufeira, a beloved destination for British tourists, is considering a ban on swimwear outside of beach areas, which could lead to fines for offenders.
The popular city of Albufeira in Portugal's Algarve region is contemplating a new code of conduct aimed at regulating tourist attire. Under the proposed rules, anyone sporting a bikini or going shirtless in public could face fines of up to €1,500 (£1,250). This decision comes after a series of embarrassing incidents, particularly one involving men dancing nude in broad daylight, which tarnished the city’s image.Albufeira, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, has drawn attention for unsavory tourist behavior, prompting local authorities to act. Mayor José Carlos Rolo emphasizes the need to maintain the city's identity as a "multicultural, family-friendly and safe destination." The updated regulations will also prohibit public sexual acts and impose strict penalties on businesses that fail to uphold these standards. While the proposal is currently under public consultation, it could be implemented as early as next summer, joining other European cities like Barcelona and Dubrovnik in enforcing similar tourist behavior laws. The city hopes these changes will promote better conduct and enhance the visitor experience.
