In brief

Amid escalating violence in Gaza, a U.S. diplomat has denounced a report predicting famine, emphasizing the challenges of accurate data collection in the region.

The plight of Gazans intensifies as humanitarian concerns grow. A new report from the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS Net) claims that parts of northern Gaza are facing “highly likely” famine conditions. This alarming assertion has drawn a sharp rebuke from U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Jack Lew, who criticized the report as "irresponsible" and based on outdated population data. Lew stressed the importance of maintaining accurate information amidst a humanitarian crisis that has seen numerous struggles to assist those in need due to ongoing military operations. Since the war's onset on October 7, 2023, Israel's campaigns have caused widespread displacements in the Gaza Strip, complicating aid efforts and data collection. While Israel insists it's working to improve aid delivery, obstacles remain, including claims of looting hampering the distribution of supplies. The Biden administration previously urged Israel to enhance humanitarian access, leading to some improvements, but further action is still being sought.
