In brief
Israel's response targets Houthi military operations linked to missile threats against Israel.
Israeli naval forces have launched missile strikes on the port city of Hudaydah, Yemen, currently under the control of the Iran-backed Houthi movement. The Israeli military stated that these attacks were a direct reaction to missile threats from the Houthis targeting Israel, aimed at preventing the port's use for military activities. Although social media showcased clouds of smoke rising from the port, no casualties have been reported yet.The Houthis, supporting Palestinians in Gaza, have previously aimed missiles towards Israel, with recent incidents including an interception over Jerusalem. Following the navy strikes, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued evacuation orders for those near Hudaydah and other Houthi-controlled ports, anticipating a continued threat to safety.Despite the naval assault, a Houthi media official claimed that the strikes did not significantly affect their operations or morale. This latest offensive comes as Hudaydah remains a crucial entry point for humanitarian aid in Yemen, a nation deeply affected by civil war since 2014. The consistent Houthi missile attacks have recently disrupted maritime trade in the Red Sea, forcing shipping companies to reroute, reflecting broader regional instability.
