Police in Georgia clashed with anti-government protesters trying to storm the presidential palace in the capital, Tbilisi.

Security forces used water cannons and pepper spray to disperse demonstrators.

The Caucasus country has been in crisis since the ruling Georgian Dream party claimed victory in last year's parliamentary election, which the pro-European Union opposition contends was stolen. Since then, the government has paused talks on joining the EU.

The protest occurred alongside local elections, largely boycotted by the opposition following a government crackdown. One organizer called for the arrest of leaders from the Georgian Dream party.

Waving Georgian and EU flags, tens of thousands marched in central Tbilisi. Organizer Paata Burchuladze read a declaration urging internal affairs employees to arrest six senior Georgian Dream figures.

As demonstrators approached the presidential palace, riot police deployed pepper spray in response to attempts to breach the compound.

The protest follows a recent crackdown on activists, media, and political opposition, with many pro-Western opposition leaders currently jailed.
