In brief

A surprise strike at Hamburg Airport has forced the cancellation of all flights, affecting tens of thousands of travelers as workers demand better pay and conditions.

A sudden strike by ground staff at Hamburg Airport, Germany’s second largest, has cancelled all flights this Sunday morning. Starting at 6:30 a.m., the strike, called by the labor union Verdi, was unexpected and began earlier than planned, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Over 40,000 travelers were anticipated at the airport, with 144 arrivals and 139 departures scheduled. However, only 10 flights took off before the strike commenced, prompting officials to direct affected passengers to their airlines for further support. Katja Bromm, airport communications chief, expressed that the strike had disrupted travel right before the busy spring holiday, stating, “The union is paralyzing the airport and without notice.” Verdi, representing public sector workers, aims to push for better employment conditions amid stalled negotiations affecting over 25,000 employees in aviation security. Strikes across Germany could also impact around a dozen other airports, including Frankfurt and Munich, with more than 3,400 flights canceled due to ongoing labor disputes. The strikes highlight growing frustrations as the country deals with an economic downturn post-pandemic and critical challenges within its political landscape.
