In brief

Footage reveals protests for international protection amid intense conflict between government forces and rebel factions.

Amid growing violence and chaos in Syria’s coastal region, hundreds of civilians have taken refuge at the Russian Hmeimim air base, with new satellite images and videos confirming their presence. The unrest stems from fierce clashes between fighters aligned with the new Syrian government, led by Ahmed al-Shara, and loyalists of the former dictator Bashar al-Assad, resulting in over 1,300 fatalities, predominantly among civilians. Videos and satellite imagery captured at the base show large crowds of civilians brandishing signs and chanting “We want international protection,” as they seek safety from escalating violence nearby. Footage shot over the weekend reveals families receiving food assistance from military personnel and the installation of several military tents within the base's premises. Most of the violent outbreaks have been reported in the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus, particularly in the town of Jableh. Reports indicate that approximately 1,000 of those killed in the recent clashes were civilians, allegedly at the hands of forces loyal to the new regime. These developments highlight the ongoing struggles within Syria, showcasing the urgent humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
