The character was inspired by the tragic story of Daniel Robitaille, a Black artist lynched in the 19th century, a narrative that Todd often engaged with, using it for discussions about fear and trauma. The film's memorable scenes, particularly involving bees, came with their own challenges. Todd recounted being stung 23 times for the role, humorously mentioning that he received a bonus for each sting—"everything that’s worth making has to involve some sort of pain," he joked.
