In brief
They aim to raise awareness about his wrongful deportation and the broader implications for immigrant rights.
Four Democratic lawmakers have landed in El Salvador to advocate for the release of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident mistakenly deported to the country. Representatives Robert Garcia, Maxwell Alejandro Frost, Yassamin Ansari, and Maxine E. Dexter hope to shine a light on the case after the Trump administration failed to act following a Supreme Court directive for his return.Kilmar, originally from El Salvador, had been living in Maryland with his family when he was detained and deported last month amid claims linking him to gangs—claims disputed due to a prior judge's ruling confirming the dangers he faced in El Salvador. Following his deportation on March 15, a federal judge ordered his return, with the Supreme Court supporting that decision in early April. The Trump administration initially acknowledged the deportation was a mistake but later insisted it was lawful. Senator Chris Van Hollen, who visited last week, managed to meet with Kilmar after overcoming Salvadoran government resistance. The visiting Democrats plan meetings with U.S. Embassy officials and human rights organizations to advocate for not just Kilmar but also others in similar predicaments.
