In brief

The return marks a significant turn in a diplomatic strain between Indonesia and Australia.

Five Australian men, previously members of the notorious Bali Nine drug ring, have recently returned to Australia after serving almost two decades in an Indonesian prison for smuggling heroin. Their return marks the end of a deeply controversial case that has been a source of diplomatic tension between the two countries since the events began in 2005.The group, comprising Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, Martin Stephens, Si Yi Chen, and Michael Czugaj, were previously apprehended attempting to carry heroin in Bali, a popular tourist hotspot. They arrived back in Australia recently, while two of their co-defendants faced execution in 2015, another died in prison from cancer in 2018, and one was released for good behavior.Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the repatriation as an "act of compassion" from Indonesia's newly elected President Prabowo Subianto, who aims to improve relations between the two nations. An Indonesian official clarified that these men were not granted pardons but were transferred for their rehabilitation back home. The absence of a formal prisoner transfer agreement means the men are now free to start a new chapter of their lives in Australia.
