In brief
Passengers detail their harrowing experiences during a chaotic deportation flight to Brazil.
On January 28, 2025, a U.S. deportation flight to Brazil faced serious issues, leaving passengers in distress. The plane, carrying 88 Brazilian deportees, encountered multiple technical problems while stuck in the Amazon heat. As temperatures soared, the air conditioning malfunctioned repeatedly, leading to an uproar among the shackled migrants. Amidst crying children and rising tempers, some passengers even managed to activate emergency exits and escape onto the plane's wing, pleading for assistance. Brazil's federal police quickly intervened, ordering U.S. immigration officials to release the deportees. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded by dispatching a Brazilian Air Force aircraft to shuttle the deportees home. Brazilian officials criticized the American authorities' handling of the situation as “unacceptable” and “disrespectful.” This incident drew attention from Colombia, where President Gustavo Petro announced that his country had rejected two U.S. deportation flights, escalating tensions between the U.S. and Colombia over potential trade tariffs.
