In brief

The civil war in Sudan has led to horrific abuses, with over 200 documented cases of sexual violence, including children as young as one year old.

In a heartbreaking revelation, UNICEF has reported that armed men in Sudan have committed sexual violence against hundreds of children, dragging them into a nightmare as the civil war intensifies. Since the start of 2024, health providers have recorded 221 cases of rape, affecting 147 girls and 74 boys, including four infants. The report highlights how children, even those under 5, are targeted for horrific acts, with many suffering severe injuries and psychological trauma.Victims have shared chilling accounts of being abducted and violently returned, illustrating the brutality of this ongoing conflict. Although comprehensive statistics are scarce, a 2024 U.N. investigation indicated a worrying prevalence of gender-based violence in war-torn areas, particularly where the Sudanese military clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The brutal civil war, ignited in April 2023, has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced over 11 million people. Survivors now grapple with impossible choices—whether to speak out or remain silent due to societal stigma surrounding sexual violence. UNICEF's Tess Ingram emphasizes that, in Sudan, it’s survivors who bear the cultural burden of shame, leaving them to make life-altering decisions about their futures and those of their children. The tragic reality is that many find themselves without homes, support, or safe environments to heal and rebuild their lives.
