In brief

The latest report shows 156 million Americans breathe polluted air, raising concern for public health.

Almost half of the U.S. population, around 156 million people, are living with unhealthy air quality due to high levels of ozone and particulate pollution, according to the American Lung Association's recent "State of the Air" report. This alarming figure represents about 46% of the population, highlighting the urgent need for better environmental policies. The report warns that plans to relax air quality regulations might exacerbate the situation. Pulmonologist Panagis Galiatsatos from Johns Hopkins emphasized that the Clean Air Act has been essential in improving lung health and safeguarding overall public health. Analyzing data from 2021 to 2023, the association noted a troubling trend, particularly during a record-breaking wildfire season in Canada that contributed to worsening air quality. Despite significant improvements in air quality since the Clean Air Act's introduction in 1970, millions still face health impacts from pollution. The report shows that 42 million Americans live in areas failing to meet air quality standards for all three major pollutants, with nearly 480 out of 885 monitored counties failing at least one pollution measure.
