In brief

The home that overlooked the darkest chapters of history is now transforming into a visitor's center, inviting reflection and understanding of the Holocaust.

The former residence of Rudolf Höss, the notorious commandant of Auschwitz, is set to open its doors to the public, offering a haunting glimpse into history. Nestled in Oswiecim, Poland, this three-story house was home to Garzyna Jurczak, who raised her family there for 42 years, even as they lived in proximity to the site of unimaginable tragedy. Jurczak described the house as a “great place to raise children,” despite its grim surroundings. However, growing discomfort with visitors trampling through her garden after the release of the Oscar-winning film “The Zone of Interest” compelled her to sell the home to the Counter Extremism Project, which plans to turn it into a visitor center. The project aims to educate and promote reflection on the atrocities of the Holocaust, ensuring that this location serves as a sobering reminder of the past for future generations.
