In brief
Netanyahu faces multiple challenges, including health concerns and ongoing conflict in the region
In a significant development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to undergo surgery this Sunday to remove his prostate. This decision follows his recent diagnosis of a urinary tract infection, reported earlier this week. Netanyahu, 75, was treated at Hadassah Hospital on Wednesday after experiencing complications stemming from a benign enlargement of his prostate. The prime minister's health struggles have been mounting; earlier this year, he dealt with a hernia surgery during intense international scrutiny regarding Israel's military actions in Gaza. His health complications escalated further in 2023 when a fainting episode led to hospitalization and the fitting of a pacemaker due to irregular heartbeats. Coinciding with these health setbacks, Israel continues to conduct airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, responding to missile assaults by the Iranian-linked group. The country is also engaged in ongoing military operations in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria, amid heightened regional tensions since the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023.Additionally, Netanyahu is currently embroiled in a corruption trial that has divided the nation; he faces significant accusations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, further complicating his political and personal landscape.
