In brief

A deadly ambush highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis amid Sudan’s civil war.

In a tragic event reported this week, five members of a United Nations convoy were killed while attempting to deliver much-needed humanitarian assistance to the war-torn city of El Fasher, North Darfur. The convoy, made up of 15 trucks from UNICEF and the World Food Program, was attacked late Monday after a long journey from Port Sudan. This was intended to be the first humanitarian shipment to El Fasher in over a year, carrying crucial supplies for around 100,000 distressed residents. The ambush occurred in a market town where the convoy had paused for the night, with many vehicles set ablaze and vital aid supplies damaged. The United Nations expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the urgent need for access to vulnerable populations amid ongoing conflict. El Fasher is currently the last significant city in Darfur held by the Sudanese Army and has faced relentless assaults from the rebel group Rapid Support Forces.Further complicating matters, the UN had communicated the convoy’s route to local forces to ensure safe passage. However, recent attacks, including an airstrike in the area, illustrate the perilous conditions for humanitarian workers. UNICEF has indicated that although two trucks in the convoy were unharmed, the commitment to support local communities has only strengthened, with plans to reroute the aid deliveries despite the horrific attack.
