In brief
Storms like Trami highlight the increasing impact of climate events in Asia.
Tropical Storm Trami has made a significant landfall in Vietnam this Sunday after causing tragic consequences in the Philippines, where at least 80 lives were lost due to flooding and landslides. The storm reached the central Vietnamese city of Danang with winds at about 55 miles per hour, remaining below hurricane intensity. This recent storm follows severe effects felt from Trami in the Philippines, leading to the evacuation of over half a million residents, damaging around 28,000 homes, and leaving 66 individuals injured, with 34 still unaccounted for. The Philippine Office of Civil Defense stated that relief efforts have been hampered due to severe flooding. As Trami progresses inland, Vietnam’s meteorological agency warns of possible flooding and landslides, with predictions of up to 16 inches of rain in some areas by Monday night. Aviation operations were disrupted, leading to temporary suspensions at Danang International Airport; however, normal operations resumed as the storm approached. In addition, another tropical storm named Kong-rey is developing near the Philippines and is expected to impact the region shortly. This increasing frequency and severity of tropical storms highlight the urgent need for disaster preparedness and climate resilience measures as they continue to threaten vulnerable communities across Southeast Asia.
