In brief

A recent earthquake caused a tragic building collapse in Bangkok, leading to arrests tied to a controversial construction firm and raising serious safety concerns.

The Thai authorities have taken action following a catastrophic building collapse in Bangkok, which occurred after a major earthquake struck last month, leaving dozens dead. A Chinese national, Zhang Chuanling, has been arrested in connection with China Railway 10th (Thailand), a state-owned firm involved in the construction of the 30-story tower, which was meant to serve as the State Audit Office. Zhang, along with three other board members who are currently evading arrest, faces allegations of violating local laws that restrict foreign ownership in businesses. Investigators have discovered evidence of questionable practices, including the use of Thai nationals as proxies for foreign ownership, leading to heightened public concern about the safety regulations in place for construction projects.Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has vowed to investigate further, prompted by the fact that such a significant structure could collapse despite the earthquake originating over 600 miles away, in Myanmar. The building’s structural integrity has been called into question, with reports from former workers indicating possible use of substandard materials due to cost-cutting measures. Thailand’s justice minister confirmed that several construction irregularities have been flagged, spurring a wider review of all ongoing projects with China Railway 10th in Thailand, where they currently oversee about 12 active constructions. The shocking event has raised alarms about building safety standards and the influence of foreign corporate entities in Thailand's construction sector.
