Sudan is engulfed in chaos as the oil-rich Kordofan region emerges as the latest battleground in the ongoing conflict between the army and rival paramilitary groups. With the death toll climbing into the hundreds from recent attacks, both parties are racing for control over this crucial area that not only supplies Sudan’s oil but is also vital for neighboring South Sudan’s economy.

Analysts suggest that whoever holds Kordofan holds the key to dominate Sudan's oil supply. While the army aims to reclaim territory lost to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the RSF desires to solidify its influence and momentum in the region. Civilian areas, including schools and homes, have suffered from airstrikes carried out by the army, prompting international condemnation.

The fighting has uprooted millions, leaving behind a humanitarian disaster. Reports indicate that over 150,000 lives have been lost since the conflict reignited in April 2023 due to a power struggle between Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo ("Hemedti"). As the battle continues, fears grow that Kordofan could see an even higher civilian death toll, further exacerbating the already devastating situation in Sudan.
