The International Space Station (ISS) recently shared stunning videos of the Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis, twinkling in vibrant greens and reds across the Canadian sky. Typically seen close to the ground in high-latitude regions around the Arctic, this natural light show can also be viewed beautifully from space.

The phenomenon occurs when solar wind — a surge of charged particles emitted by the Sun — interacts with Earth's magnetic field. Footage captured in January 2025 features the shimmering lights dancing gracefully over Canada's landscape, while city lights glimmer below. As the ISS travels 259 miles (417km) above the Earth, it soars above the Atlantic, giving viewers a magical glimpse of our planet from a unique perspective.
