The heavy rains triggered flash floods in Rasuwa district, claiming the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge and causing widespread destruction on Tuesday. The floods left behind a scene of chaos, with a customs yard inundated where numerous vehicles and cargo were parked. As search efforts continue, nine individuals — including police and civilians — remain unaccounted for.
Nepal’s army and police launched air rescues, but the rescue operation has been complicated by the harsh mountainous terrain, which is known for such disasters. Binod Ghimire, a police spokesperson, stated some officers went missing while performing rescue duties. Tragically, climate change is exacerbating the frequency and severity of these disasters, as evidenced by the 495 monsoon-related deaths recorded last year.
This year, the Indian Himalayas are facing similar destruction, with significant casualties reported in Himachal Pradesh due to landslides and floods. As the monsoon season intensifies, both Nepal and India brace for more challenges ahead.
