In brief

The Democratic Republic of Congo faces a shocking increase in sexual violence against children due to recent conflicts, with UNICEF reporting 170 rapes in just one week. As clashes intensify, children are among the most vulnerable victims of the ongoing turmoil.

Sexual violence against children in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has recently surged, according to UNICEF. This spike in violence is largely attributed to ongoing ethnic conflicts and disputes over resources in the region. The organization reported an alarming 170 child rape cases documented in just one week—from January 27 to February 2—compared to an average of only 95 cases in past weeks.UNICEF's communications chief for Congo, Lianne Gutcher, indicated that the violence is being perpetrated by "armed men" from various factions involved in the conflict. Parallel reports from Save the Children reflected similar trends showing that children are becoming primary victims of these clashes. The situation escalated sharply when rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, began a rapid takeover of significant territories in Congo. Their advances have displaced over half a million people, including the capture of Goma, a city of three million near the Rwandan border. Rwanda’s government has denied any involvement in supporting these rebels.Notably, the armed group known as M23 claims to protect the local Tutsi population, but experts believe their real motive lies in exploiting Congo's rich mineral resources. UNICEF's executive director, Catherine Russell, expressed her shock at the scale of recent violations against children, which include rape and other forms of sexual violence.Reports indicated specific instances, such as 18 girls being sexually assaulted in South Kivu, highlighting the dire conditions faced by children. One heartbreaking testimony mentioned a mother whose six daughters were systematically raped while searching for food.As the fighting persists, the futures of many children in the region remain perilous, with medical staff struggling to provide necessary care for survivors of such horrific acts.
