Texas lawmakers have rolled out new congressional maps that lean into Republican strength just ahead of the 2024 elections. After a heated two-week standoff, where a group of Democrats fled Texas to block the vote, the Republican-controlled House passed the redistricting proposal with a solid 88-52 majority.

The maps are set to enhance Republican representation by targeting five Democratic-held seats, aiming to solidify their majority in the U.S. House. Following the House’s approval, the Senate is expected to rubber stamp the plans quickly.

This showdown caught national attention when state Democrats attempted to halt the vote, leading to Governor Greg Abbott issuing arrest warrants for absent members and law enforcement monitoring their homes. Dem lawmakers have returned, stating their absence sparked awareness about the redistricting issue and brushed up discussions in other states to craft countermeasures against Republicans.

To prevent further walkouts, Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows implemented strict measures, including locking chamber doors and assigning officers to escort returning Democrats. Yet, some legislators expressed defiance, with state Rep. Nicole Collier opting to spend the night in the chamber rather than comply with the escort orders.
