In brief
The deal with the U.S. aims to support Ukraine's reconstruction efforts but lacks critical security guarantees.
The minerals deal signed between the U.S. and Ukraine is expected to funnel significant funds into a joint investment initiative aimed at rebuilding Ukraine once the war with Russia concludes. However, the extraction of the country’s untapped mineral resources—key to the deal—will take considerable time and may not produce the wealth that former President Trump has often referenced. The nine-page agreement, which was publicly released by Ukraine's government, previously suggested that Ukraine would utilize its mineral wealth to repay U.S. military assistance, but this idea was ultimately removed from the final document. Additionally, the deal appears to leave the possibility open for Ukraine to join the European Union, a move supported by both the U.S. and Russia. However, notable in its absence, the deal does not address Ukraine's longstanding request for security guarantees to shield it from possible Russian aggression if a ceasefire is reached. Despite these gaps, the signing of this agreement marks a significant milestone, binding Trump to Ukraine's future in a way that seemed unlikely just a few months ago.
