In brief

Senator Daines is stepping in as a messenger between the U.S. and China, aiming to address trade tariffs and the fentanyl crisis, and encourage high-level talks between Trump and Xi Jinping.

Senator Steve Daines of Montana has taken on the role of mediator between the U.S. and China amidst increasing trade tensions and the ongoing fentanyl crisis. Following President Trump's inauguration for his second term, no significant meetings between U.S. and Chinese officials have taken place, prompting Senator Daines to step forward.During a recent trip to Beijing, Daines met with Vice Premier He Lifeng and has plans to discuss critical issues with Premier Li Qiang. A key point of Daines' message revolves around the need for China to take action against the export of chemical precursors for fentanyl, a significant concern for the Trump administration. In his meeting with He Lifeng, he echoed President Trump’s “America First” stance while highlighting the severity of the fentanyl issue. Chinese authorities have countered that the solution lies within the U.S. to address rising demand for the drug. Daines indicated the importance of laying the groundwork for a future meeting between Trump and China's Xi Jinping but noted that the timing and location remain uncertain.
