In brief

Three lawyers representing Aleksei Navalny receive prison sentences, revealing the Kremlin's relentless crackdown on dissent.

In a significant move, a Russian court has sentenced three lawyers linked to the late opposition leader Aleksei Navalny to prison terms of up to five and a half years. The court accused Vadim Kobzev, Igor Sergunin, and Aleksei Liptser of transmitting correspondence from Navalny to his supporters, clearly indicating the government's determination to isolate him and his associates, even after his tragic death in a penal colony last year. The lawyers were arrested in October 2023, during a time when Navalny was enduring severe conditions in a high-security prison in Siberia. The court's verdict in Petushki, near Moscow, has drawn attention to the Kremlin’s authoritarian actions against those who continue to advocate for Navalny's political ideals.Navalny, renowned as Russia’s most prominent opposition figure, consistently opposed President Vladimir Putin's regime and had his political organization labeled as extremist prior to the onset of the 2022 Ukraine invasion. Following the convictions, Yulia Navalnaya, Navalny’s widow, condemned the sentencing and labeled the three lawyers as political prisoners, calling for their release. Lyubov Sobol, a close associate of Navalny, referred to the court's ruling as Kremlin-driven retaliation against those who remained loyal to Navalny's cause.
