In brief

Essentials to fight diseases like TB, H.I.V., and malnutrition are stuck due to funding issues from U.S.A.I.D., impacting communities worldwide.

In a troubling development, essential health programs globally are stalled as the Trump administration appears to be ignoring a federal judge's order that aimed to pause the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D., the main foreign aid agency of the U.S. Many health initiatives in Africa and Asia, which rely heavily on U.S. funding, report that they cannot continue their crucial work. Interviews with health workers reveal dire situations; for instance, parents in Kenya are unable to test their kids for tuberculosis. Meanwhile, displaced populations in Nigeria and Bangladesh lack access to clean drinking water, and South Sudan's malnutrition treatment programs have been halted. “People are traveling over 300 kilometers just to find the medications they need," lamented Maleket Hailu, whose organization assists people affected by H.I.V. in Ethiopia. The essential medicines that used to be provided by U.S.A.I.D. are now inaccessible, leaving many without vital healthcare. The State Department claims that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued around 180 waivers allowing some life-saving activities to continue, but many organizations—over 40 U.S.A.I.D.-funded groups—report that despite these waivers, their access to funds has also been blocked. The payment systems used by U.S.A.I.D. have been non-functional for weeks, leaving nonprofits primarily dependent on these grants unable to operate. The future remains uncertain as funding restrictions continue to inhibit the ongoing global health crisis.
