In brief

The University of Sussex has been fined £585,000 after a probe into its handling of free speech and academic freedom, following the resignation of a professor who alleged harassment over her views on gender identity.

The Office for Students, England's higher education regulator, slapped the hefty penalty on the institution after an investigation commenced three years ago. It all began when Kathleen Stock, a philosophy professor, stepped down in 2021, claiming she was targeted by student activists due to her stance that transgender women are not biologically female. Dr. Stock described her experience as one filled with bullying and harassment. While the university backed Dr. Stock initially, the regulator asserted that its policies aimed at supporting trans equality resulted in a “chilling effect,” leading individuals to self-censor their opinions. This included mandates for course materials to favorably portray trans individuals. In a counter-response, the university criticized the ruling, stating it hampers their ability to combat bullying speech and indicated a push towards unrestricted free speech among campuses. The vice chancellor, Sasha Roseneil, vowed to legally challenge the regulator’s decision, arguing it exacerbates divisive culture wars surrounding freedom of expression.
