In brief

The state‑owned company flew 237 helicopters for emergency medical services in its first ten months of 2026, averaging 33 missions in October alone. With eight aircraft spread over two bases, Bulgaria Heli Med Service aims to expand to four bases by year‑end, improving coverage and response time across the country.

Bulgaria Heli Med Service announced on a Facebook post that it had carried out 237 air ambulance missions since January 2026. The number shows the growing demand for rapid medical transport across the country.

In October alone, crews completed 33 emergency medical flights, the highest monthly total reported so far this year. The spike points to a continuing trend of increased reliance on helicopter services for urgent care.

The company now operates eight helicopters and has expanded its base coverage from one location in 2025 to two bases in 2026. This expansion allows crews to be closer to patients in need, cutting travel time.

Management has announced plans to double the number of bases to four by the end of 2026. The move would increase the service’s reach, especially in rural and mountainous areas where ground transport can be slow.

Patients in critical condition benefit from the faster response, as helicopter crews can reach remote hospitals and transfer patients to high‑level care centers within minutes. The service’s growth helps keep the public well‑served during medical emergencies.

With the planned expansion, Bulgaria Heli Med Service hopes to strengthen its position as a vital public health partner, ensuring that more people get timely medical attention across the nation.
